APR (Purch): 12.99% Variable* Annual Fee: $20** Category: Reward - Gas Review The Shell MasterCard®, issued by Citibank, is ideal for those who frequently purchase gas from Shell gas stations. Through the reward program, cardholders earn a 5% rebate for Shell related purchases and a 1% rebate for general purchases made with the card (common for gas reward related cards). Cardholders can also earn an extra 5% rebate on the first $100 of daily purchases made at Jiffy Lube. There is no limit to the amount of rebates that can be earned per year, which is a definite plus. However, any unused rebates do expire within one year. Nevertheless, since rebates are automatically applied towards gas purchases made at Shell, this should not be too much of a concern to cardholders who frequently purchase Shell gas. Aside from the reward program, the card offers several platinum benefits such as an extended warranty for purchases, travel accident insurance, and auto rental insurance. The annual fee is waived the first year, and there is no annual fee in each subsequent year if at least nine Shell gasoline purchases are made per year. The interest rate for purchases is reasonably low for a reward card, however, is not ideal for those who plan to carry a large revolving balance. It is important to note that there is a minimum cap of 19.99% for cash advances, so no matter how low the Prime Rate falls (the APR is tied to the Prime Rate), the interest rate will not go below the minimum cap. Therefore, those who can afford to pay in full each month (to avoid finance charges), plan to frequently use the card at Shell gas stations (to earn higher rebates), and will be able to redeem rebates before the one year expiration period will benefit most from what the Shell MasterCard® has to offer.
